I like how many people are saying the MCU’s explanation for Wanda’s powers don’t really make any sense when you start to think about it. BRUH Wanda’s powers have never made sense. And honestly, as the years have gone by, they seem to increasingly gets more and more confusing. In the comics, the reason (or REASONS) for why Wanda has her powers is like every single reason thrown into one insane pot. 1. Wanda’s a mutant. “Magic” is just her mutation. Or, it wasn’t always magic, just some super vague power, that was referred to as ‘Hex Powers.’ 2. Wanda has magic. Mutation aside, Wanda is someone who uses magic, like Doctor Strange. In some versions, other magical users could also wield ‘hex magic’ (the name of Wanda’s specific type of magic – depending on the comic). 3. Chaos Demon. Wanda was cursed by a powerful chaos demon when she was baby/child, so that’s why she has chaos magic. No longer Hex magic, but Chaos. 4. Nexus Being. Wanda is a Nexus being or was chosen to be one. This is the reason for why she not only has her powers, but is so damn powerful. Or, slightly in reverse, Wanda is a Nexus Being, BECAUSE she has all of this power. 5. Experiment, not a Mutant. Wanda and Pietro are not mutants, but instead experiments of The High Evolutionary. Wanda already had the power to wield magic (I think), but due to the experiments she is now more enhanced to better handle and wield magic (again, I think). Sometimes these different reasons retconned one another, and other times they existed at the same time. - Wanda’s powers in general have always been vague and weird, leaving a lot of freedom for the writers. And then each time the comics tried to explain Wanda’s powers (and consequentially Pietro’s), it just got weirder and weirder. - Wanda and Pietro’s biological origins have also largely been all over the place. When Wanda and Pietro were first introduced, they were just mutants born to human parents - Django and Marya Maximoff Then it was ‘revealed’ (retconned) that those two weren’t their biological parents, but in fact The High Evolutionary (a crazy geneticist) had given them away to the Maximoffs. Implying they weren’t really mutants, but also leaving that option open (I guess). Basically, their parentage was left super vague. Then that was kind of retconned, and they became the children of two superheroes named the Whizzer and Miss America. Then that was retconned and Magneto became their father and the two were confirmed to be mutants once more. Magneto being their father was their origin for 30+ years. The Maximoffs were still Wanda and Pietro’s adopted parents. But then it was revealed (retconned) that Marya was their biological aunt and her sister Magda, was their mother. Though it seems Magda being their biological mother was dependent on who was writing. As sometimes she wasn’t their biological mother. Also, I swear I thought at one point it was revealed that Marya Maximoff had an affair with Magneto and was the twins’ biological mother. But I can’t find anything that says that, so I probably just made that up. THEN In 2014 (I think), Wanda and Pietro were retconned to no longer being Magneto’s children nor mutants. Instead, they were revealed to be experiments of The High Evolutionary and possibly Django Maximoff’s (and maybe Marya’s) biological children. Again I think, it’s all very confusing. Now this retcon was pretty much done to have the twins better fit in with the MCU, who couldn’t legally have the explanation of them being mutants (or Magneto’s children), because Disney didn’t own the rights to the X-Men. Now, I’m going be honest -- the last retcon doesn’t seem to matter all that much. No one really cares about it and Wanda and Pietro are still largely considered to be Magneto’s children, because well that’s been their history for the past 30+ years. - This is not the entire history of Wanda’s powers (and biological origin) and I’m sure there is a ton of stuff that I’ve missed. But that just proves my point. Wanda’s powers are weird, especially in regard to why she specifically has them. -- Slightly related, this is all very funny to me – Pietro has very simple powers that are easy to explain in a superhero comic (relatively speaking). But because he’s Wanda twin, he also gets retconned like crazy and the more complicated the reason for why Wanda’s has her powers, the funnier it becomes, because Pietro is still “just” a speedster, no matter what.
